این مقاله‌‌ مروری به بررسی مبانی نظری و محدودیت‌‌های تجربی دو فرضیه‌‌ بنیادین در اقتصاد کلان بین‌‌الملل، یعنی فرضیه‌‌ بازارهای کامل و برابری بهره‌‌ بدون پوشش (UIP)، در چهارچوب الگوی استاندارد نوکینزی برای اقتصاد باز کوچک می‌‌پردازد. در بعد نظری، فرض وجود بازارهای مالی کامل بین‌‌المللی به شرطی قوی برای تسهیم ریسک در سطح بین کشوری می‌‌انجامد که مصرف داخلی را مستقیماً به مصرف جهانی و نرخ ارز حقیقی پیوند می‌‌دهد. به‌‌طور هم‌‌زمان، اجازه دادن به خانوار‌‌ها برای انتخاب بین اوراق قرضه‌‌ داخلی و خارجی، شرط برابری بهره را نتیجه می‌‌دهد که بر اساس آن، تفاوت نرخ بهره‌‌ها کاملاً توسط کاهش ارزش مورد‌‌انتظار پول ملی خنثی می‌‌شود و تفاوت نرخ بهره داخل و خارج رشد نرخ ارز را کامل توضیح می‌‌دهد. اگرچه این نتایج چهارچوبی کارآمد و مفهومی را فراهم می‌‌آورند؛ اما پیش‌‌بینی‌‌های تجربی آن‌ها به‌‌طور نظام‌‌مند شکست می‌‌خورند. فرضیه‌‌ تسهیم ریسک توسط داده‌‌ها رد می‌‌شود که در معمای باکوس-اسمیت متجلی است، و از سوی‌دیگر، برابری بهره‌‌ بدون پوشش همواره توسط معمای صرف آتی نقض می‌‌گردد. در مواجهه با این ناهنجاری‌‌هایی که به‌طور پیوسته در داده‌‌ها مشاهده می‌‌شوند، ادبیات اقتصادی از الگوواره(پارادایم) بازارهای کامل به‌سوی الگوهای غنی‌‌تری حرکت کرده است که واقعیت‌‌هایی همچون بازارهای ناقص، اصطکاک‌‌های مالی، انحراف از انتظارات عقلایی، صرف ریسک متغیر با زمان و رفتار قیمت‌‌گذاری متناسب با بازار را دربرمی‌‌گیرند. این مرور، سیر تحول این الگو‌‌ها را ترسیم می‌‌کند و نشان می‌‌دهد که هر اصلاحیه‌‌ نظری چگونه می‌‌کوشد تا الگوی ظریف مبتنی بر مبانی خرد را با پویایی‌‌های نا‌‌منسجم که در نرخ‌‌های ارز و الگوهای مصرف بین‌‌المللی مشاهده می‌‌شود، هم‌‌سو سازد.
